If a hydrogen storage facility receives hydrogen from multiple sources with varying carbon intensities, it is recommended that the operator adopt a robust tracking system. This system should document the volume and carbon intensity of hydrogen from each source. This could involve:
- Supply Contracts: Contracts with hydrogen producers specifying the carbon intensity of their hydrogen. These should be verifiable by an independent third party.
- Mass Balance Accounting: Tracking the precise amount of hydrogen received from each source and calculating a weighted average carbon intensity for the stored hydrogen.
- Third-Party Verification: An independent auditor verifies the accuracy of the tracking system and the calculated carbon intensity.
The resulting weighted average carbon intensity needs to meet the SAT’s Green criteria (outlined in Section 4.4) for the stored hydrogen to be classified as Green.
